ABS statistics released by the Federal Labor Government indicate that youth unemployment is at 42.6 % in the northern suburbs of Adelaide.
This is a significant jump from 29.1 % in December 2011. Further, there were almost 3,000 more people unemployed in December 2012 in the northern suburbs than a year ago.
This 42.6 % figure in December 2012 follows a 43.1 % figure in November 2012. These figures are a 12 month average and are showing a consistently high level of youth unemployment.
Youth unemployment in southern Adelaide is also high at 30.1 % for December 2012, up from 18.6 % in December 2011.
Today’s figures also highlight that across Adelaide the total number of unemployed jumped by 6,800 from 31,900 to 38,700 a 21 % jump in the last month. In the last 12 months,
5,500 jobs disappeared from the western suburbs.
“These Federal Government figures show that young people are doing it tough under the Weatherill Labor Government.” Shadow Minister for Employment Iain Evans said.
“Labor keeps saying they have run up a record debt and lost the State’s credit rating in order to create jobs. These figures indicate the high debt is hurting jobs!” Mr Evans said.
