  • Local governments and community groups share in $100,000 for youth
  • WA has fastest growing population of young people

Young people across Western Australia will benefit from a $100,000 State Government grants program to help improve their life skills, wellbeing and resilience.

Youth Minister Tony Simpson said local governments and community groups could apply for up to $5,000 to help develop the knowledge and confidence of young people and to encourage them to be actively involved in community life.

“The Youth Activities Grants program offers an opportunity for organisations to engage 12 to 25-year-olds in projects that will achieve positive outcomes for them.” the Minister said.

“This can include encouraging young people to participate in their local community; providing opportunities for them to learn and develop life skills; and promoting healthy lifestyles.

“Young people make up 20 % of WA’s population – the fastest growing population of youth in Australia. They are our future and it is important that we support them to reach their full potential.”

Successful projects will align with the State Government’s ‘Our Youth – Our Future: Western Australia’s Youth Strategic Framework’ that guides youth program and service planning.

For example, the Shire of Merredin received a grant last year to enable a local youth committee, Merredin Young Voice, to organise a mini festival to celebrate the end of the school year. Local bands and dance groups performed at the drug and alcohol-free event.

“Youth activities like that can leave a lasting impression on the young people who take part, and on their communities.” Mr. Simpson said.

The grants program is open on an ongoing basis. Applications are assessed by the Department of Local Government and Communities every three months.
