Victoria’s Finest Student Artists Honoured

Victor P Taffa

Victoria’s most promising young artists were the stars of the night at the opening of Top Arts: VCE 2010 at the National Gallery’s Ian Potter Centre.

Education Minister Martin Dixon congratulated the 53 students whose diverse works were selected from more than 1,800 entries.

“I am extremely impressed by the level of talent and creativity on show.” Mr. Dixon said.

“These students have clearly earned the honour of having their work hanging in the same gallery as Australian icons John Brack, Margaret Preston and Sidney Nolan.”

“Top Arts is an extremely important exhibition, both as a launch-pad for Victoria’s next generation of artists and because it provides us with a unique glimpse into the ideas of our youth.”

“For some this may well be the start of a long and successful career in the arts.” Mr. Dixon said.

Top Arts features exemplary work completed by VCE Art and VCE Studio Art students and includes photography, drawing, printmaking, painting, textiles and ceramics.

Mr. Dixon said the exhibition showed the extremely high level of arts education being achieved throughout Victoria’s schools.

“Top Arts showcases the extraordinary talents of our emerging artists and the teachers, families and schools who support and nurture that flair.” Mr. Dixon said.

“Not only does this exhibition celebrate outstanding work, it also provides a valuable resource for this year’s VCE students and teachers who can learn from the accompanying folios and education programs on offer.

“Victoria is renowned as an artistic community, not only throughout Australia but around the world, and this exhibition proves this reputation is in safe hands.” Mr. Dixon said.

Top Arts: VCE 2010 opens at the Ian Potter Centre, NGV Australia at Federation Square from today until June 19. Top Arts is part of the VCE Season of Excellence, a four month festival of events celebrating the talent and creativity of VCE students, and includes Top Screen, Top Class, Top Design and Top Acts.
