Development Of Land At Henley Brook Brought Forward By Three Years

Victor P Taffa

The State Government has fast-tracked a major housing development by three years to provide affordable homes for people in Perth’s North-East Corridor.

The joint venture between the Department of Housing and Brookfield Residential Properties will see 225.7ha of land at Henley Brook developed into 2,650 lots.

Inspecting the site today, Housing Minister Bill Marmion said the Whiteman Edge Development would address the strong demand for affordable housing in the North-East Corridor.

“A number of lots in the development will be priced within the reach of low to moderate income earners, allowing them to get a foot on the Property Ladder.” Mr. Marmion said.

“The Government has set the goal of producing 20,000 dwellings by 2020 that are affordable, appropriate and available, and the release of land in this development will go some way to achieving this.”

The first 94 lots have already commenced development and are expected to go on sale before the end of 2010.

The State Government was successful in attracting a Federal Government grant of $6.9 Million to bring forward major infrastructure works such as sewerage, water and roads.

The cost savings will be passed on to homebuyers through a rebate system equal to the Federal Grant.

“The Heads of Agreement signing will ensure Whiteman Edge offers a diverse range of quality, affordable housing options for a wide range of groups including first homebuyers, young families and downsizers.” the Minister said.

“Whiteman Edge is at the forefront of residential community design, with 22 ha of the Development devoted to Share Community Recreational Facilities, along with a neighbourhood Shopping Centre and Planned Schools.” Mr. Marmion said.

The Government will launch its affordable housing strategy before the end of 2010. The strategy is based on 56 recommendations made by the Social Housing Taskforce and will aim to provide more affordable housing to West Australians.

The Whiteman Edge Development site is 17 km North-East of the Perth CBD and is opposite Whiteman Park.
