White Night Receives Special Helpmann Nomination
Victor P Taffa
Minister for Tourism and Major Events Louise Asher today welcomed the announcement that the success of the inaugural White Night Melbourne will be recognised as the official nominee for the ‘Best Special Event of 2013’ for next month’s prestigious Helpmann Awards.
“White Night Melbourne delivered an outstanding new major event for Victoria.” Ms. Asher said.
“Australia’s first ever ‘White Night’ was held on 23 February 2013. Melbourne’s streets, laneways and public buildings were transformed by live music, art, lighting projections, film, dance, and performance.”
“More than 300,000 people including visitors from around Australia and overseas took part in what is a wonderful addition to Victoria’s acclaimed major events calendar.”
“The Victorian Coalition Government committed to create this event and forecast that hundreds of thousands of people would take part. This is exactly what happened and we were absolutely delighted with the support from the Victorian public and are honoured to join the international network of more than 20 cities who also present White Night events.” Ms. Asher said.
Ms. Asher said the event would not have been such a success without the contribution of:
- The former Premier Ted Baillieu, who was the driving force behind the event;
- The Victorian Major Events Company (VMEC);
- Accolade Communications and Right Angle Events;
- Victoria’s cultural institutions which so enthusiastically embraced the concept and helped provide such a wonderful experience to all those who attended.
Ms. Asher said that a second Melbourne major event the world premiere production of King Kong will be formally awarded ‘Outstanding Theatrical Achievement’ at the ceremony next month.
“The design, creation and operation of King Kong are a testament to Victoria’s creative industries and the spirit of innovation that thrives in this State. Congratulations to Gerry Ryan, Carmen Pavlovic, Sonny Tilders and all at Global Creatures who brought us this ground-breaking new musical.” Ms. Asher said.
The Helpmann Awards, including the Award for Best Special Event of 2013, will be presented at a ceremony at the Sydney Opera House on 29 July and broadcast on Foxtel’s Arena channel.
