Andrews Government is ensuring Melbourne remains Australia’s capital for fashion, food and retail with the approval of the masterplan for a $500 Million redevelopment at Westfield Doncaster.

Minister for Planning Richard Wynne today gave the stamp of approval for the masterplan which will create around 2,000 jobs in construction and 2,900 new full and part-time jobs at Westfield Doncaster after completion.

“Melbourne is already the nation’s retail capital and this major expansion will cement its reputation for the years to come.” Minister for Planning Richard Wynne said.

“This project will create thousands of jobs, draw thousands of shoppers from across the world, and will be a major boost to Victoria’s economy.”

A key feature will be a gateway building of up to 14 storeys, positioned above a 2-level podium of new premium retail in the north-west sector of the site.

This will provide an additional 43,000 sqm of retail and 18,000 sqm of commercial office space.

Upgrade will include an expanded bus interchange, improved car and pedestrian access within the centre and additional car parking.

Feedback from the community on the proposed development plans was taken on board, following the public viewing of development plans in December and January this year.

“Expansion to Westfield Doncaster will create thousands of local jobs and make this shopping district even better.” Member for Eastern Metropolitan Shaun Leane said.

“We’ve listened to community feedback on this development and now we’re making sure it gets underway.”

Approval paves the way for the owners to lodge a Planning Permit with the Manningham City Council and ensures the community’s needs are included in the development.

Retail industry is one of Victoria’s most important employers, providing over 300,000 jobs across Melbourne and regional Victoria.

Figures released earlier in January by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) showed that Victorians spent a record $78.9 Billion on retail sales over the last year.

Victoria is home to internationally renowned fashion events such as Melbourne Spring Fashion Week, the Australia Fashion Festival and the Melbourne Cup Carnival.
