Man To Face Court Charged With Deliberately Lighting Grass Fire – Wagga Wagga

A man will appear in court today charged with deliberately lighting a grassfire in Wagga Wagga.

Police were called to the levee bank near Reddoch Drive and Day Street (Central Wagga) about 10.50pm yesterday (Wednesday 16 December) where a fire had been lit in grassland.

The fire spread to an area of about 10m by 20m before NSW Fire Brigades extinguished the flames.

Police responded quickly and conducted a search of the area and arrested a 42-year-old Wagga man on the levee bank near Hammond Avenue, about 400 metres south of the fire.

At the time of his arrest the man was dressed in a singlet, underpants and shoes and was in possession of a box of matches.

The man was taken to Wagga Wagga Police Station where he was interviewed and charged with Intentionally Cause Fire with Recklessness.

The man was refused bail and will face Wagga Local Court today (Thursday 17 December).
