Leaders from 54 nations together with more than 3,000 delegates and visitors will descend on Perth for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) from October 28-30, 2011.
Premier Colin Barnett today welcomed the announcement by the Prime Minister and the Secretary-General of the Commonwealth saying it signalled an important milestone in the planning for the event.
Premier Barnett said the CHOGM would coincide with a royal visit so planning for all the events could now proceed in greater detail.
“CHOGM will be the biggest event to be held in Perth for many years, with the leaders of 54 Commonwealth nations set to participate.” the Premier said.
“The meeting not only provides an opportunity to increase public awareness of the value and function of the Commonwealth, but it is also an opportunity to put Perth on the map as Australia’s Indian Ocean capital city, and establish Perth and Western Australia as a modern and world-class destination.”
“It is a rare opportunity to promote Western Australia throughout the world, particularly in Southern Asia and the African-Indian Ocean Rim. I am confident we can provide great venues and showcase the State.”
“We will be very much at the centre of world political debate for that week in October 2011.”
“CHOGM is more than simply a meeting of Commonwealth leaders. It includes business, youth and community forums surrounding the leaders’ meeting, and these events will provide some opportunities for business and the community to participate.” Premier Barnett said.
The State Government is working with the Commonwealth Government to make sure CHOGM 2011 is a successful and memorable event.
