Western Australia To Celebrate Harmony Week

Western Australia Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Interests John Castrilli said the annual Harmony Week events, which begin on Sunday, presented all West Australians an opportunity to celebrate their State’s cultural diversity.
“Harmony Week is a multicultural community relations initiative unique to WA and encourages people to proudly support multiculturalism.” Mr. Castrilli said.
The Minister said migration had been an essential component of the nation’s development with nearly seven million migrants arriving in Australia since 1945.
“Western Australia has the highest proportion of people born overseas than any other State and is home to more than 200 cultural groups and nearly 300 languages.” Mr. Castrilli said.
“The State Government is proud to provide opportunities for all West Australians to experience and appreciate our diverse range of cultures, traditions, languages and religions.”
“The wonderful lifestyle we enjoy in this State is influenced by our cultural diversity built on mutual respect, free from prejudice and discrimination.”
Mr. Castrilli said this year’s Harmony Week oration would be presented by Her Excellency the Governor-General Quentin Bryce acknowledging the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
Across the State, government departments, local governments, businesses, schools and community groups will be presenting a range of activities including:
- Shire of Katanning Harmony Festival, Sunday March14, Katanning Leisure Centre
- Town of Vincent Harmony Festival, Sunday March14, Hyde Park
- Harmony International Folk Festival, Sunday March 14, Perth Concert Hall
- Girra Mirra Harmony Week Festival, Friday-Saturday March 19-20.
Harmony Week officially takes place from March 15-21 and is proudly sponsored by the Western Australia State Government.
