Western Australia’s filmmakers will again have the opportunity to work on a Tim Winton film project following the State Government’s $175,000 investment in the production of The Turning.

Announcing the funding as he launched the Revelation Perth International Film Festival’s Get Your Shorts On! program, Culture and Arts Minister John Day said the State Government had helped secure the filming of The Turning for WA.

“The Turning is a compendium feature film based on a collection of 17 short stories written by Tim Winton, and six of the 17 short stories will be filmed in Western Australia.” Mr. Day said.

“ScreenWest’s Stepping Stone Initiative provides opportunities for WA filmmakers to develop their skills further the six films shot here will require WA directors, producers, directors of photography, an editor, together with several internship opportunities.”

“This project will provide strong industry development and it is significant that ScreenWest is able to provide the opportunity for practitioners to work on a national production of such scale alongside Cate Blanchett and David Wenham.”

The Minister said short film events such as Get Your Shorts On! was an ideal platform to give WA’s filmmakers opportunities to demonstrate their talents.

“To announce The Turning at this year’s Get Your Shorts On! 10th anniversary program is timely as a number of filmmakers who participated in past Get Your Shorts On! programs will be engaged in the production of the six short films.” Mr. Day said.

“With the success of Red Dog, Cloudstreet, Jandamarra’s War and Mad Bastards, the WA film and television industry is thriving and it is very promising to see a strong crop of emerging creative talent coming through each year.”
