Victorians Choose Unique Royal Gift For The Prince

Victor P Taffa

Premier of Victoria Denis Napthine today announced, with 3AW host Neil Mitchell, the six Australian children’s books chosen by the Victorian community to be presented to the young Prince.

“I want to thank Victorians for their enthusiastic response to choosing Australian and Victorian children’s books for the Royal baby boy.” Dr. Napthine said.

“I would like to give particular thanks to Neil Mitchell and his listeners for their great suggestions.”

“We are sure these books will give the young Prince as deep a love and affinity with Australia and the State of Victoria as do other members of the Royal Family.”

“Both Peggy and I have loved reading many of these books to our children and I am sure they will be enjoyed for years to come by the Prince.” Dr. Napthine said.

The six selected books are:

  • Animalia – Graeme Base;
  • Blinky Bill – Dorothy Wall;
  • Bollygum – Garry Fleming;
  • Edward the Emu – Sheena Knowles;
  • Snugglepot & Cuddlepie – May Gibbs;
  • Wombat Stew – Marcia Vaughan.

Bollygum has a very special connection to the Black Saturday bushfire recovery efforts, in which Prince William took part during his visit to bushfire affected communities in 2010.

The book provided the inspiration for a bushland park to be constructed in Kinglake in the wake of the Black Saturday bushfires.

The Premier will also be sending a Geelong Football Club Kitty Cat membership to the Prince.

“I hope that the Prince, when he is older, will go along to a Geelong match and enjoy our great national game.” Dr. Napthine said.

The books and the membership will be sent to the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge in the coming days.
