Boy Shot In Hand During Hunting Incident – Mathoura
A boy is in hospital suffering from a gunshot wound sustained while hunting at Mathoura on the State’s South last night.
Police have been told about 11:00 pm, the 12-year-old boy and his 37-year-old father from Shepparton in Victoria were hunting on a rural property on the Cobb Highway at Mathoura when the boy accidentally shot himself in the hand.
It is believed the boy was getting out of a Toyota Landcruiser and carrying a rifle when he has discharged the firearm shooting himself in the right hand.
The boy’s father drove to Echuca Hospital where the child received treatment and was later transferred to the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne where he is expected to undergo surgery. His injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
Police from Deniliquin Local Area Command were contacted and attended the property with detectives investigating the circumstances surrounding the matter.
The Toyota Landcruiser will be examined by Specialist forensic officers while the rifle and an amount of ammunition were seized.
Investigations into the matter are continuing.
