Minister’s Statement On The Passing Of Merv Neagle

Victor P Taffa

As a fellow Wimmera boy and former Essendon player I was shocked and saddened at the news of the tragic passing of Merv Neagle yesterday.

Merv was a top football player, who came to Essendon from Dimboola at the same time as Tim Watson, and played a stellar 147 games for the Bombers including the year he came runner up for the Brownlow in 1980. He also played 56 games for Sydney.

Following retirement from AFL football, Merv gave back to local footy by coaching clubs as far as the Northern Territory, Merbein in Victoria and Walla Walla in New South Wales.

This is a tragic loss and my thoughts and condolences go to his family, friends and his football community.
