The Minister for Roads Terry Mulder today announced the first stage of an $8.7 Million transport improvement project at Travancore will start this week.

“The benefits of the improvements along this 500 m section of tram route 59 on Mt. Alexander Road at Travancore will be wide reaching.” Mr. Mulder said.

“Improvements include tram track renewal, the separation of vehicles and trams, a pair of new level access tram stops outside the Flemington Community Centre and installation of traffic signals.”

VicRoads has been working closely with the Moonee Valley City Council, Yarra Trams and the Department of Transport to improve safety, tram travel times, and tram accessibility at this location.

“Trams are often delayed here due to congestion on the tram tracks. These changes will improve tram travel times by separating trams from traffic.” Mr. Mulder said.

“New level access tram stops will also improve safety, access to trams and visual amenity.” Member for Northern Metropolitan Craig Ondarchie, a former local business operator, said he strongly supported the project.

“This upgrade will be fantastic for the local area. The traffic, particularly in the morning, creates continual difficulties for residents trying to get to work, and importantly, parents battling the road to get their children to school safely.” Mr. Ondarchie said.

“This will vastly improve vehicle, tram and pedestrian movement around that precinct it will be a much welcomed improvement.”

Works will be carried out in three stages through to April next year to minimise disruption to traffic flow and local residents. Stage 2 of the works, planned for early January, includes tram track renewal which will require road closures. Further information will be provided in the lead up to the works.

VicRoads and Yarra Trams scheduled the tram track renewal works in January as it is the quietest time of the year on what is normally a very busy main arterial road.

The new level access platform tram stops at stop 23 on Mt. Alexander Road will be completed as part of Stage 3, with the project scheduled for completion by March 2012.

The project will be delivered as part of Think Tram which is managed by VicRoads in partnership with the Department of Transport and Yarra Trams. Think Tram aims to improve tram travel times, reliability and safety along the busiest parts of Melbourne’s tram network.
