Coalition To Ease Cost Of Living For Struggling Victorians

• $351.4 Million Plan for Lower Electricity Bills All Year Round for Concession Card Holders
• $42.1 Million in Stamp Duty Relief for Eligible Seniors including Eligible Self-Funded Retirees
A Victorian Liberal Nationals Coalition Government will ease cost of living pressures for older Victorians by funding a year-round reduction of 17.5 % on their Electricity Bills for concession card holders, Coalition Leader Ted Baillieu said today.
The Coalition will also extend stamp duty relief to self-funded retirees who are entitled to a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card.
Meeting with older Victorians at Keilor Bowls Club with Leader of The Nationals and Shadow Minister for Regional and Rural Development Peter Ryan, Mr. Baillieu said Victorians were struggling with increasing energy costs under Premier John Brumby and concession card holders deserved a fair go.
“Victorians, especially those on fixed incomes, are struggling with day to day living costs that are increasing at an alarming rate.” Mr. Baillieu said.
“Under John Brumby, costs keep rising but basic services are going backwards.”
Victorians are paying more but getting less because of Labor’s incompetence and waste. A Coalition Government will help to fix these problems for concession card holders by extending the current winter electricity concessions all year round, providing relief for older Victorians and other concession card holders.” Mr. Baillieu said.
The Coalition’s $351.4 Million Electricity Bill Concession Plan will enable more than 800,000 households to benefit from lower electricity bills year-round.
“Concession card holders have worked raised families and paid taxes their whole life, so it is only fair for the Coalition to give something back by reducing the cost of living.” Mr. Ryan said.
“This practical assistance will reduce basic living expenses for hundreds of thousands of Victorians.”
Labor’s summer electricity concession policy will only apply to concession card holders for the three-month summer period. The Coalition’s plan means that Victorian concession card holders will receive a 17.5 % reduction on their electricity bills all year round, not just the existing winter electricity concession.
The new concession will be available to holders of Pensioner Concession Cards, Health Care Cards or Department of Veterans Affairs Gold Cards.
The Coalition will also extend the land transfer stamp duty concession threshold to $750,000 for all seniors, including self-funded retirees, at a total cost of $42.1 Million.
“Under John Brumby, Victorian seniors who downsize their homes are currently being slugged with unfair levels of stamp duty.” Mr. Baillieu said.
“Extending the land transfer stamp duty concession threshold to $750,000 will help to relieve this burden, and unlike Labor we will extend this concession threshold to self-funded retirees who are entitled to a Commonwealth Seniors Health Card.” Mr. Baillieu said.
