Even Giddings Has Lost Confidence In Business

Small Business Confidence in Tasmania is struggling so much that one in five small businesses expect to be closed within 12 months. This is a damning indictment on Labor’s economic performance, according to Shadow Minister for Small Business Adam Brooks.

“Figures released in the Sensis Business Index show that the uncertainty created by The Premier and Treasurer Lara Giddings has led to a massive drop in business confidence, plummeting a whopping 13 % since this time last year.” Mr. Brooks said.

“Ms. Giddings can no longer pass Tasmania’s poor economic performance off as the impact of the Global Financial Crisis. The rest of Australia’s trade grew by an average of nearly 3 and a half % in the 12 months to December last year, while Tasmania was the only state to contract.”

“The Labor-Green Government’s failure to deliver on its promises is now clearly on show as business confidence plummets, and Ms. Giddings plan to sack thousands of the state’s nurses, teachers and Police is only going to create greater uncertainty in the Tasmanian economy.” Mr. Brooks said.

“This Government knows better than any that uncertainty leads to less spending, which is ultimately going to leave the state in an even worse budget position.”

“Small businesses have been telling the Tasmanian Liberals for months that they cannot afford to keep going with the soaring cost of doing business and choking red tape that this Government has implemented.”

“That is why the Liberals will be introducing legislation in Parliament to cut red tape and also to introduce a local benefits test for Government contacts.” Mr. Brooks said.

“Lara Giddings needs a plan to actually help increase small business confidence in Tasmania, rather than just cutting frontline services and increasing economic uncertainty.” Mr. Brooks said.
