Tasmanian Senators Have Been Decided

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) has announced that the count for the election of six Senators for Tasmania was completed earlier today. The successful candidates for the six Senate vacancies for Tasmania are (in order of their election):

  1. Helen POLLEY (Australian Labor Party)
  2. Eric ABETZ (Liberal)
  3. Christine MILNE (Australian Greens)
  4. Anne URQUHART (Australian Labor Party)
  5. Stephen Shane PARRY (Liberal)
  6. Lisa SINGH (Australian Labor Party)

The Acting Australian Electoral Officer for Tasmania, Sandra Riordan, said that the Senate count had involved the keying-in of votes into a computerised system, and today an automated process was used to distribute preferences and determine the six elected candidates.

“As with all aspects of the count, the automated distribution of preferences undertaken today was open to scrutineers appointed by the candidates.” Ms. Riordan said.

“Approximately 80% of voters cast their ballo Above-The-Line on the Senate ballot paper while 20% voted Below-The-Line.” Ms. Riordan said.

The successful candidates will be formally declared elected:

WHEN: 10:00 am Friday 10 September 2010.

WHERE: AEC office, 2nd Floor AMP Building, 86 Collins Street Hobart.

All candidates, members of the media and the public are welcome to attend.
