In a major coup for Tasmania, Hobart will showcase more men’s T20 World Cup matches than any other host city, as we play host to six of the world’s leading men’s cricket teams.

“I welcome today’s announcement by the ICC World Twenty20 of the first two teams to play in Hobart during the T20 World Cup, with Bangladesh and New Zealand taking to Bellerive Oval next year. Further teams will be confirmed over the coming months through their qualifying tournaments.” Minister for Sport and Recreation Jacquie Petrusma said.

Hodgman Government is a strong supporter of cricket, and has been working hard with Cricket Tasmania to secure the games.

T20 World Cup matches in Hobart in October 2020 will feature:

  • 8 matches over,
  • 9 days.

Across the 9-day event, 6 Group Stage matches will be played over 3 days of double headers, with 4 teams playing each other once. This will be followed by two Super 12 matches.

T20 World Cup provides an excellent opportunity to enhance Tasmania’s international profile and reputation as our State is broadcast to the world. The matches will also showcase our ability to play host to boutique events.

“Hodgman Government is committed to developing and supporting opportunities for all Tasmanians to participate in sport, and through securing events such as the highly coveted T20 World Cup matches, we aim to achieve a legacy of increased interest and participation in cricket at a grassroots and professional level.” Minister Petrusma said.
