A new capsule exhibition featuring sculptures, jewellery and ceramics from the State Art Collection will visit regional audiences across Western Australia from 2020.
“This Government’s commitment to the Regional Exhibition Touring Boost is providing fantastic opportunities for regional audiences to engage with such prolific pieces of artwork from the AGWA Collection.” Minister for Culture and the Arts David Templeman said.
“We are also building the capacity for regional galleries to present more diverse exhibitions in the future.”
There Were Moments of Transformation will present works by eminent international artists including Auguste Rodin, Pierre August Renoir, William Kentridge as well as Western Australia artists Lucy Yukenbarri and Bethany Linton.
Local galleries in Katanning, Geraldton, Carnarvon and Collie will present the exhibition together with community engagement activities such as artist talks and workshops for children and family. Further galleries taking part will be announced soon.
“Freight Ideas project provides fantastic opportunities for those living in the regions to see stunning artworks from both international and local artists, without having to leave their town.” Minister for Regional Development Alannah MacTiernan said.
“We strongly encourage anyone in the regions to attend the exhibitions, events like this are vital in bringing people together and ensuring our communities across the State stay connected.”
There Were Moments of Transformation is a part of the Freighting Ideas project, which connects regional audiences with the State’s art collection and encourages local communities to participate in broader conversations about art.
First exhibition from the project How Did I Get Here? is currently touring across Western Australia, opening at the Ningaloo Centre in Exmouth tonight and continuing until October 13, 2019. The exhibition has been presented at Katanning and Collie and will visit Bunbury, Geraldton, Carnarvon and East Pilbara next year.
Freighting Ideas project also assists galleries to build capacity for presenting diverse exhibitions with art handling, training, producing, upskilled staff and volunteers, and a galleries improvement fund which has provided them with much-needed upgrades. Through this fund, the Ningaloo Centre received more than $20,000 to install moveable walls allowing bespoke spaces to be created depending on exhibition needs.
This project has been funded by the McGowan Government’s $8 Million Regional Exhibition Touring Boost. It is delivered by ART ON THE MOVE and AGWA, and is managed by the Department of Local Government, Sport and Cultural Industries with funding support from the Royalties for Regions program.
