Tasmania Minister for Infrastructure Jeremy Rockliff

Spirit Passenger Numbers Continue To Soar

Victor P Taffa

Latest TT Line statistics confirm the 2 Spirits are carrying more passengers than ever before while also achieving record freight volumes, Minister for Infrastructure Jeremy Rockliff said.

Spirit of Tasmania ships carried a record 448,764 passengers for 2017-18, which is 3% more than the year prior.

It’s great news for Tasmanian businesses and the economy, especially on the north-west as we know that visitors who come to Tasmania via the Spirits stay longer, spend more, and visit more regions than those who arrive by air.

Figures also confirmed:

  • Record freight volumes for the second year in a row, with 105,208 twenty-foot equivalent units shipped compared to 103,430 in 2016-17;
  • Record revenue of $244.6 Million, a 30 % increase since 2012-13;
  • Sailings increasing by 3 % to 859, with the highest number of day sailings since 2004.

“We are also getting on with the job and delivering two new, next generation Spirit of Tasmania ships that will be 30 % larger than the current Spirits, with an even bigger increase in passenger and freight capacity.”

“I congratulate TT Line on another great year and look forward to more positive results as we deliver on our plan to improve the lives of every Tasmanian.” Minister Rockliff said.
