More than 4,000 passengers a day will benefit from direct and safe access to Southland shopping centre with major construction beginning at Melbourne’s newest railway station.

Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan and the Member for Bentleigh Nick Staikos announced the start of major construction for the new Southland railway station.

“Thousands of passengers will now get direct and safe access to Southland shopping centre for the first time.” Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan said.

“Southland railway station will boost public transport access to the shopping centre with a safer, more direct route while providing an alternative to neighbouring Highett and Cheltenham stations.”

Works will begin with the construction of an underpass which connects the two platforms.

The new station will include direct access from the shopping centre, bathrooms and ramp and stair access to both platforms.

Early works on the project were completed earlier this year, including the installation of track drainage and cabling works, as well as raising the tracks to provide a straight track for the station.

Local residents, shoppers and staff will for the first time have direct access to the shopping centre by public transport. They currently have to walk or catch the bus from Highett and Cheltenham stations.

“This is a government that keeps its promises. We promised a new station for Southland and we’re getting it done.” Member for Bentleigh Nick Staikos said.

“The new station will give shoppers, workers and families direct access to this vibrant retail hub.”

Traffic and parking congestion in the surrounding streets will be eased by encouraging people to leave their car at home.

Key design elements of the station have been shaped by consultation with the local community including incorporating toilets into the station layout.

Construction will be completed by the end of 2017.

Location

Southland Railway Station will be located on the Frankston Line between Highett and Cheltenham Railway Stations.

History

First proposals for a railway station between Highett and Cheltenham stations on the Frankston line at Bay Road, occurred in the early 1880’s, during the completion of the Frankston Line. Plans progressed throughout the 1880’s, until they discontinued in 1892.

When Westfield Southland opened in 1968 the plan for a Railway Station was raised again. In what has become an on-again off-again local debate plans to construct a Southland Railway Station have gained far more serious traction by the Andrews Government under Minister for Public Transport Jacinta Allan.
