Hume Highway closed following truck fire – Gunning
Motorists are advised the southbound lanes of the Hume Highway are blocked following a truck fire at Gunning last night.
About 10pm, a B-Double was travelling south on the highway, when one of its tyres blew-out and caught fire just North of the Gunning exit.
The fire spread to the rest of the rig, quickly igniting its load of approximately 36 tonnes of recycled paper.
While the driver managed to escape the truck fire unharmed, fire crews are having extreme difficulty in extinguishing the blaze.
The southbound lanes are expected to remain blocked until mid morning, when it is hoped it will be safe to clear the wreckage.
As a result, southbound traffic is being diverted to Yass via the Federal Highway and Barton Highway.
Motorists are being urged to delay their trips if possible or allow extra time to reach their destination.
