Member for Cairns, Michael Healy, will join Police Commissioner Katarina Carroll, Minister for Police Mark Ryan and Cairns Police for a free community sausage sizzle at the Cairns City Police Beat, at 5.45 pm this evening.

Mr. Healy urged members of the local community to come along and meet the state’s “Top Cop”.

“It’s a great opportunity for people living in Cairns to talk about community safety with Commissioner Carroll.”

“Commissioner Carroll is very community oriented.” Mr. Healy said.

Minister Ryan said he had attended a number of community events with the Commissioner.

“She is always very keen to hear the views of the members of local communities.” Minister Ryan said.

“That quality has been evident ever since she took over the top job.”

Minister Ryan said recent initiatives by the Queensland Police Service in Cairns demonstrated their commitment to the community.

“Following the success of The Greater Cairns Taskforce which was established in January for a two-month period, Police have decided to go ahead with Greater Cairns Task Force Mark II.”

“Original incarnation of the Task Force targeted crime hotspots in the Far North District, particularly the greater Cairns area.”

“Task Force achieved significant success with 503 persons arrested on over 731 charges with a reduction in property crime overall of 13%.” Minister Ryan said.

“With the great success of Greater Cairns Task Force 1 and with the impending school holidays and tourist season approaching, the GCT is being reformed during a three-month period from 9 November to 31 January 2020.”

“A total of 33 officers will be dedicated to the Task Force, including members of the Tactical Crime Squad, detectives and the road Policing unit.”

“Police advise that to date, the Task Force has achieved 285 arrests on 486 charges with 2,132 street checks being performed.”

“This is community Policing that disrupts criminal offending and supports community safety.” Minister Ryan said.

“I urge the people of Cairns to come along to the free community sausage sizzle and speak to the Commissioner and local Cairns Police about the issues that matter to their community.”
