Premier Welcomes Qantas Decision

Victor P Taffa

Queensland Premier Campbell Newman today welcomed the decision by Qantas to consolidate its heavy maintenance facilities in Brisbane.

Premier Newman said the aviation sector was a very important industry in Queensland and that Qantas played a key part.

“Qantas has already made a significant investment in aviation infrastructure at Brisbane Airport.” Premier Newman said.

“The decision to consolidate heavy maintenance facilities in Queensland further demonstrates the airline’s commitment to the State.”

Premier Newman said the LNP Government put forward a strong argument that under the new Government Queensland would be a business friendly state, committed to cutting red tape and growing a four pillar economy.

Premier Newman said Brisbane will be the home of Boeing 737 maintenance, along with B767 aircraft and Airbus 330s.

He said the movement of the heavy maintenance facilities to Brisbane meant there would be new job opportunities in Queensland.

Qantas Defence Services, Qantas Link and Jetstar will all maintain operations in Brisbane.

Premier Newman said Qantas operates about 100,000 weekly domestic seats into Queensland airports.

He said the move by Qantas to consolidate its heavy maintenance facilities in Brisbane was consistent with the LNP Government’s target to cut Queensland unemployment to 4 % within six years.
