Queensland Loses Lady Florence Bjelke-Petersen Aged 97 Years

Bedrock of Queensland’s longest serving Premier Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen, Lady Flo Bjelke-Petersen has died.

Lady Flo Bjelke-Petersen was married to Queensland’s longest serving continuous Premier and had such a high enough popular following that she was also elected as a Senator for Queensland in the Federal Parliament.

Born on 11 August 1920 Sir Joh Bjelke-Petersen’s wife Florence Bjelke-Petersen may have become a Senator for Queensland from 1981-93 however Flo Bjelke-Petersen will best be remembered for her Pumpkin Scone recipes.

This in no way simplifies Lady Flo but highlighted how her own personal popularity grew as shown by a connection with people through things that everyone could identify with.

Lady Bjelke-Petersen was born in the same year that the National Party began.

Lady Bjelke-Petersen died on 20 December 2017.

Queensland’s Lady Florence Bjelke-Petersen’s Pumpkin Scone Recipe


Lady Flo’s Pumpkin Scone Recipe

1 tablespoon butter

1/2 cup sugar

1/4 teaspoon salt

1 egg

1 cup mashed pumpkin (cold)

2 cups Self raising flour


Cooking Method: Baking

Beat together butter, sugar and salt with electric mixer.

Add egg, then pumpkin and stir in the flour.

Turn on to floured board and cut.

Place in tray on top shelf of very hot oven 225-250 degrees C for 15-20 minutes
