Northern Territory Government continues to invest in Local Government sporting and entertainment facilities.

Minister for Tourism and Culture, Lauren Moss said this extra funding will help to create jobs, support businesses and ensure these vital facilities across the Territory continue to provide social, cultural and economic benefits to the community.

“We invest in the Territory’s community assets because we know they build vibrant communities, boost the economy and create local jobs.” Minister Moss said.

“We have worked with the councils to ensure this funding supports their key priorities and is aligned with their master planning process.”

Member for Barkly, Gerry McCarthy said $4 Million will be spent on delivering projects as part of the Purkiss Reserve Masterplan.

“This is great news for Tennant Creek.” Mr. McCarthy said.

“Purkiss Reserve is the main sporting precinct in Tennant Creek. This boost is on top of the $5 Million already invested in the Reserve to support Tennant Creek youth re-engagement programs and activities.”

“Located in the heart of town, the new and upgraded facilities will provide more opportunities for events and social gatherings, which contribute to positive outcomes for young people’s health and well-being.” Mr. McCarthy said.

Upgraded sport and recreation facilities will promote social engagement, physical and emotional well-being and family friendly participation. For example, the playgrounds will provide interesting and challenging opportunities to climb and explore which are important development and fun aspects of play based learning.

Purkiss Reserve Masterplan priorities have been determined in consultation with the community and include:

  • Remove and install attractive external security fencing
  • Upgrade the lighting throughout the facilities
  • Construct adequate parking facilities including for day visitors
  • Internal service road
  • Minor playground with soft fall
