Victoria Minister for Police and Emergency Services Kim Wells

PSOs Target Commuter Safety In Railway Car Parks

Victor P Taffa

Protective Service Officers (PSOs) will be keeping an eye on commuters as they return to their vehicles at railway station car parks after dark.

Minister for Police and Emergency Services Kim Wells today received confirmation from the Office of the Chief Commissioner of Victoria Police, which PSOs would escort and had previously escorted passengers to railway station car parks upon request.

Mr. Wells sought confirmation from the Chief Commissioner after an Essendon commuter wrote to the Minister to suggest that people returning to railway car parks after dark would feel safer with a PSO escort.

“Where a commuter seeks an escort to his or her car, the PSO will escort them unless they are tending to a situation on the platform that requires PSO intervention.” Mr. Wells said.

“I welcome the Chief Commissioner’s confirmation regarding PSO escorts because the Coalition Government is working hard to ensure our railway stations are places of safety, not places of fear.”

“We are committed to ensuring Victorians feel safe on our streets, in their homes and on our public transport network.”

“There are now 433 PSOs deployed to 68 stations across Melbourne from 6 pm until after the last train every night of the week.”

PSOs have issued more than 12,000 infringement notices for a wide range of offences, including public drunkenness, possession of alcohol, graffiti and possession of weapons.

The 23rd squad of PSOs has been deployed across the rail network, following a graduation ceremony at the Victorian Police Academy on Friday.

The Victorian Coalition Government has committed to recruiting and deploying 940 PSOs to the rail network as part of a $212 Million investment.

“As well as 940 PSOs, an additional 1,700 frontline Police officers are being recruited, which represents the largest single law enforcement recruitment exercise in Victoria’s history.” Mr. Wells said.
