  • $1.38 Million Protea Lodge cancer hostel now open
  • Part of a $5.48 Million investment into cancer services in the Mid-West

Health Minister Roger Cook today officially opened the Protea Lodge hostel which is ideally located adjacent to the Midwest Cancer Centre.

“A cancer diagnosis is a traumatic experience and there are many treatment options to be considered; being with our loved ones and support networks at such a time is crucial, and treatment closer to home can have a huge impact on a patient’s wellbeing.” Minister for Health Roger Cook said.

“New Protea Lodge cancer hostel has been delivered in partnership with the Commonwealth and will provide a ‘home away from home’ for patients and their carers with non-clinical, comfortable and inviting accommodation.”

New hostel makes it easier for patients to attend appointments and be treated closer to home where they have the support of their family and friends.

Hostel will include seven double rooms providing accommodation for cancer patients and their carers from remote Mid-West communities. It enables access to some specialist cancer services without the added stress of having to travel for treatment.

$1.38 Million hostel is being delivered as part of a $5.48 Million commitment in Geraldton, which has already seen the construction of a six-chair, one-bed chemotherapy unit completed in 2016.

Both projects are part of the Strengthening Cancer Services in Regional WA initiative a $22.9 Million commitment by the Federal Government which will see 10 projects delivered by the Western Australia Country Health Service across the State.

Opening of the hostel follows significant investment for the Mid-West, with the McGowan Government delivering on its election commitment to fund the much-needed expansion of Geraldton Health Campus, which will undergo a major $73.3 Million staged redevelopment and will also include a $10.2 Million community mental health Step Up/Step Down facility located off campus, providing high-quality care to our regional communities and care closer to home.

Protea Lodge was constructed by local builders Crothers Construction Pty Ltd.
