Victoria Minister for Energy and Resources Michael O’Brien

Freeway Closure At Morwell

Victor P Taffa

Tonight the Princes Freeway to the south of Morwell has been closed.

Minister for Energy and Resources Michael O’Brien said VicRoads, in consultation with Victoria Police and the Department of Primary Industries, made the decision to close the Princes Freeway to the South of Morwell near the Hazelwood Mine.

“Recent heavy rain may have caused some land movement in an area to the North side of the mine.” Mr. O’Brien said.

“Experts have examined the situation but the precise extent of the land movement will not be known for some time.”

“The immediate concern is the stability and integrity of the freeway and our first priority is the safety of motorists and local residents.”

“We will be keeping the public informed and authorities are tonight advising local residents of the situation. Authorities are not currently proposing to ask any people to move from their homes and I am advised that this will be unlikely in the future.” Mr. O’Brien said.

A community meeting has been arranged tomorrow (Friday) at the council offices in Commercial Road, Morwell for 5.30 pm.

“The situation is being closely monitored. Local residents and the media will be updated as information comes to hand.”

“Professor Tim Sullivan, a respected geotechnical expert is on site and providing advice on the situation.”

“The area affected does not impact on the Hazelwood Power Station or Victoria’s energy supply.” Mr. O’Brien said.
