Fine conditions over recent days have allowed fire crews to get a head start on Prescribed Burns, Deputy Premier and Minister for Bushfire Response Peter Ryan said today.

“When conditions are right fire crews from the Department of Sustainability and Environment and Parks Victoria have been making the most of opportunities to undertake Prescribed Burning where they can in those areas not saturated by rain.” Mr. Ryan said.

“There are very different conditions in different parts of Victoria and so we may be dealing with floodwaters in the northwest, fires in the east and burns in between.”

“We know Victorians want us to take every opportunity to carry out burns, reduce fuel loads and prepare for future bushfires in line with the Bushfires Royal Commission recommendations because it will help protect lives, communities and the environment.”

Mr. Ryan said while conditions had been wetter than in previous summers, Victoria was still in the fire season and communities needed to remain vigilant.

“Fire restrictions vary across the state and people must check local restrictions before conducting any burn-offs on their own property.” Mr. Ryan said.

DSE Chief Fire Officer Ewan Waller said early on, the Prescribed Burning Program would generally focus on regeneration burns in elevated and wetter forests, ecological burns and on smaller fuel reduction burns with asset protection benefits.

“Later in the season, when the fire risk diminishes further, the priority will shift to carrying out larger scale burns, often in more remote areas.” Mr. Waller said.

“Over the last 24 hours successful prescribed burns have been conducted near Edenhope, Kaniva, Heyfield, Yarram, Powelltown, Derrimut and Sunshine and near the NSW border in far East Gippsland.”

“If conditions are suitable, Burns are Prescribed over coming days near Yarram, Heyfield, Mt. Macedon, Powelltown, Erica and in the Otways near Lorne.” Mr. Ryan said.
