The Australian flag will fly at half-mast at all State Government department and agency buildings today, as a mark of respect for the 29 men who tragically lost their lives in the Pike River Mine in New Zealand.

Premier Colin Barnett said the tribute coincided with a National Memorial Service in Greymouth, New Zealand.

“On behalf of the West Australian community, I extend our sympathy to the family and friends of those who so tragically lost their lives.” Premier Barnett said.

“The men and women of the mining industry work hard to establish a career and carve out a better future for themselves and their families. The 29 men who lost their lives were simply doing this.”

“As members of a fellow mining community, West Australians have an immediate understanding of what attracts people to this industry and the pain that is felt when tragedy occurs.  It is a sad time and our thoughts are with the Greymouth community.” Premier Barnett said.
