  • Professor Ryan Lister from UWA wins PM’s Science award

Premier and Science Minister Colin Barnett today congratulated Western Australian scientist Professor Ryan Lister for winning the 2014 Frank Fenner Prize for Life Scientist of the Year at last night’s Prime Minister’s Prizes for Science.

These awards annually recognise excellence in science and science teaching in five categories.

“I would like to congratulate Professor Lister for winning this prize, which is a fantastic recognition of the work he is doing.” Mr. Barnett said.

The Frank Fenner Prize is awarded to a scientist at an early to mid-stage in their career for an outstanding achievement in science that advances, or has the potential to advance, human welfare or benefits society.

“This is the third major award Professor Lister has won recently; in January he won the Australian Academy of Science’s Ruth Stephens Gani Medal and late last year he was recognised in the 2013 Young Tall Poppy Science Awards.”

Professor Lister is a genome biologist and Future Fellow from the University of Western Australia’s ARC Centre of Excellence in Plant Energy Biology.

Professor Lister researches epigenetics and genomics to understand how this molecular code controls our genes and how it influences healthy development and disease in animals and plants. He has developed a revolutionary technique for mapping the epigenome, which has provided new insights into the composition and function of DNA.

The Premier said Ryan’s win exemplified the excellent work of scientists in WA.

“These exceptional achievements provide important national recognition of the State’s capabilities. I commend Ryan and wish him continued success in his science endeavours.” Mr. Barnett said.
