The Minister for Primary Industry, Willem Westra van Holthe, says his fact-finding mission to Indonesia regarding the Territory’s live cattle export trade was extremely positive.

Mr. Westra van Holthe says the visit allowed him the opportunity to begin the process of rebuilding the Northern Territory’s relationship with Indonesia through partnerships and open discussions.

“I was extremely pleased with the discussions I had in Indonesia and saw first-hand how the effects of the live cattle ban have impacted upon all facets of the trade and associated businesses.” Mr. Westra van Holthe said.

“During my talks with various industry and business representatives I made it very clear that the Territory is adaptable to changes that lead to improvements in the live export trade for both nations.”

“Indonesia welcomes the significant work undertaken by Australian and Indonesian industry in regards to live cattle exports which have seen a dramatic improvement in animal welfare standards through the Export Supply Chain Assurance System.”

“This open and transparent system allows for complete traceability of cattle exported from Australia to ensure that the animal welfare requirements are being adhered to.” Mr. Westra van Holthe said.

“I believe that if handled correctly, there are opportunities for both countries to work in partnership to achieve better outcomes for all stakeholders.”

“The continuation and strengthening of this industry is vital to the regional and remote areas of the Territory where much of our cattle production takes place.”

“Working closely with Indonesia can only be beneficial for the Northern Territory’s pastoral production industry, and our economy and I look forward to this partnership.” Mr. Westra van Holthe said.
