Toyota AFL Grand Final Draw Season 2010

Victor P Taffa

Poor Old Collingwood Forever they know how to lose Grand Finals.

Since 1897 there has been 3 VFL/AFL Grand Final Draws:

  • 1948 Melbourne vs. Essendon
  • 1977 North Melbourne vs. Collingwood
  • 2010 St. Kilda vs. Collingwood

Collingwood has once again shown their ability to choke in a Grand Final and DOES NOT deserve to win the Grand Final Replay next weekend. Collingwood lead by 24 Points and should have won the Grand Final.

When Collingwood entered the then Victorian Football League (VFL) competition in 1897 the Magpies won 11 Premierships in 40 years. These being Seasons 1902, 1903, 1910, 1917, 1919, 1927, 1928, 1929, 1930, 1935 and 1936.

Collingwood LOST the 1901, 1905, 1911, 1915, 1918, 1920, 1922, 1925 and 1926 Grand Finals.

Since the 1936 Premiership success the Magpies have only won in Seasons 1953, 1958 and 1990.

Some may say so what?

After the 1936 Premiership success Collingwood LOST in Seasons 1937, 1938, 1939 and 1952.

Between the 1958 and 1990 Premierships Collingwood LOST 8½ Grand Finals in 32 years these being: 1960, 1964, 1966, 1970, 1977 and (Replay), 1979, 1980 and 1981.

Since the 1990 Premiership Collingwood LOST the 2002 and 2003 Grand Finals.

Collingwood has LOST 24 Grand Finals which is 10 more than Premiership success. One would not mind if the Collingwood Faithful were good losers but the reputation of their supporter’s places anyone who supports another team is to hope that Collingwood loses.

Collingwood LOST the 1966 Grand Final to St. Kilda by 1 Point. Geelong took 44 years to break their Premiership drought and similarly 2010 would represent 44 years for St. Kilda to also break their Premiership drought.

Next week will represent the first football season since 1966 that both in Melbourne and Sydney there has been the Saints playing in Grand Finals in the same year.

St. Kilda Defeated Collingwood and in the Rugby League St. George Defeated the Balmain Tigers.

The Saints winning the Football Double will be a once in a 44 year event.

Collingwood LOST the 1970 Grand Final against Carlton when they lead by 44 Points at Half Time.

In the 1979 Grand Final Carlton’s Wayne Harmes made his famous run down the Members’ Wing of the MCG to secure a 5 Point Grand Final victory and to this day Collingwood supporters insist on saying ‘We was robbed.’

Collingwood LEAD the 1977 grand Final by 23 Points and LOST the Replay Grand Final by 27 Points.

Collingwood’s epic battles with Carlton and Richmond are etched into Melbourne Sporting Folklore and to this day passions run deep when a Carlton or Richmond supporter makes mention of Collingwood. Cold showers for Opposition Players at Victoria Park Ground are legendary.

Carlton vs. Collingwood Grand Finals:

  • 1910, 1915, 1938, 1970, 1979 and 1981.

Carlton has won on 5 occasions and only in 1910 did Collingwood win the Grand Final.

Richmond vs. Collingwood Grand Finals:

  • 1919, 1920, 1927, 1928, 1929 and 1980.

Richmond has won on 2 occasions in 1920 and 1980 while Collingwood won 4 Premierships against the Tigers in a winning sequence of 4 in row with the 1930 Grand Final opponent being Geelong.

Editor Victor P Taffa is a longstanding Member of the Richmond Football Club. To keep into context Collingwood’s Grand Final success against that of Richmond the Tigers have won 10 Premierships.

These being Seasons: 1920, 1921, 1932, 1934, 1943, 1967, 1969, 1973, 1974 and 1980. Of Richmond’s last 5 Premierships these were achieved over a 13 year period. In the 74 years since Collingwood won the 1936 Grand Final the Magpies have only won 3 Grand Finals.

For those people who say that the AFL should have extra time in the Grand Final will only serve to diminish the importance of the Grand Final. In 1977 and 1978 the Rugby League had drawn Grand Finals while the AFL has had to deal with a Drawn Grand Final only on very few occasions.

In addition to St. Kilda’s 1 Point victory in 1966 perhaps people should consider what occurred in the Western Australia Football League this year. The Claremont Tigers finished the season with 2 losses and 1 draw. Claremont went into the Grand Final as raging hot favourites and LOST to Swan Districts by 1 Point.

The Collingwood Ten Commandments

  1. Thou shalt not take thy name Collingwood in thy vain
  2. Thou shalt sing ‘good old Collingwood forever’ before going to sleep each night
  3. Thou shalt lose 8 ½ grand finals in 32 years
  4. Thou shalt be April premiers
  5. Thou shalt relocate to Sydney
  6. Thou shalt play 7 home games in Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Adelaide.
  7. Thou shalt play 11 away games in Auckland
  8. Thou shalt install hot water at Victoria Park
  9. Thou shalt put a retractable roof onto Victoria Park
  10. Thou shalt attempt to instil the notion of ‘being pleasant’ into Collingwood supporters
