Victoria Police will begin planning the relocation of its Essendon Operational Tactics and Safety (OTS) Training facility thanks to a $3 Million funding injection announced today by the Victorian Coalition Government.

Deputy Premier and Minister for Police and Emergency Services Peter Ryan said the funding would secure the lease on 1.5 hectares of land that had been earmarked and allow Victoria Police to commence design work on the new OTS Training facility.

“The Coalition Government is committed to ensuring Victoria Police has the resources it needs to be a world class Police Service, and while the current facility has been sufficient, the training needs of Victoria Police will soon outgrow this site.” Mr. Ryan said.

Mr. Ryan said while the Glen Waverley Police Academy would remain the key training facility, the Essendon OTS Training site would continue to train new and existing Police and Protective Services Officers (PSOs).

“There will be 940 PSOs and 1,700 more Police on the frontline in Victoria by November 2014 as part of the Coalition Government’s commitment to making Victoria safer and it’s vital we have the best facilities available to train new and existing officers.” Mr. Ryan said.

“The lease on the existing Operational Tactics and Safety Training facility at Essendon Fields will expire in January 2014 and following today’s announcement, work will begin to ensure the new OTS Training facility is bigger and better.

OTS Training facilities provide:

  • Defensive tactics training including a variety of self defence techniques;
  • Scenario-based training conducted in a “village” type of environment utilising a range of equipment;
  • Classroom-based presentations and workshops;
  • Firearms training, including coaching, and, accuracy and tactical assessments.

“Victoria needs the best Police and PSOs and the provision of training facilities goes hand-in-hand with that.” Mr. Ryan said.

Mr. Ryan said today’s announcement was part of the Coalition Government’s $30 Million budget allocation to build new and upgraded Police Stations across Victoria.
