Safety will be significantly improved at four country racecourses with the Minister for Racing Denis Napthine today announcing the installation of new plastic running rails that reduce the impact during rail contact or collision.

Dr. Napthine said the $400,000 project would see new Mawsafe plastic running rails installed at the Latrobe Valley, Warracknabeal, Casterton, and Colac racecourses.

“The installation of Mawsafe plastic running rails at these tracks is another example of the commitment of the Victorian Coalition Government and the racing industry to improve infrastructure and safety in Victorian country racing.” Dr. Napthine said.

“The new plastic running rails are state-of-the-art and will make racing at the track significantly safer. These rails have already been installed at some other Victorian racecourses where they have demonstrated a proven track record in preventing injuries to both jockeys and horses.”

“As the new rails are lightweight, they are also easier for track staff to move and therefore minimise the potential for manual handling injuries.” Dr. Napthine said.

Dr. Napthine said the installation of the new running rails was a joint partnership between the Coalition Government, Racing Victoria and Country Racing Victoria.

Racing Victoria Chief Operating Officer Bernard Saundry said the invention of the plastic running rail had revolutionised the safety of both jockeys and horses.

“The Mawsafe plastic running rail is the most significant step the industry has taken to improve safety in the past decade.” Mr. Saundry said.

“The safety and wellbeing of all horses and jockeys is paramount and the continued roll out of the plastic running rail into regional Victoria further demonstrates Racing Victoria’s commitment to the safety of all participants.” Mr. Saundry said.

Dr. Napthine said the Mawsafe plastic railings installation project was part of the second stage of plastic running rail installations across Victoria with all racecourses holding at least four race meetings a year now having had the new rails installed.

The Mawsafe running rail is a light-weight plastic post and rail system that offers almost no resistance if it is hit by a falling jockey. The horizontal rail is flexible enough to move slightly if a horse bumps and the vertical posts are designed to swing out of the way under impact from a falling jockey or horse.
