Coalition Implements State-Wide Bushfire Mapping In Response to Royal Commission Recommendations

A new standardised approach to mapping bushfire risk will provide greater certainty and protection for Victorians.

The Victorian Coalition Government today released new maps identifying areas of risk that will ensure every new home in a bushfire-prone area is built with a minimum level of protection.

These maps are the culmination of two years of work and implement a key recommendation of the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission.

Minister for Bushfire Response Peter Ryan said since the February 2009 bushfires the entire state of Victoria had been designated a bushfire-prone area.

“The new mapping system provides a more targeted approach to managing bushfire risk ensuring that only people building in areas of designated risk are required to conduct the bushfire attack level (BAL) assessment.” Mr. Ryan said.

“The Coalition Government is committed to delivering all 67 recommendations of the Victorian Bushfires Royal Commission and today’s announcement is an important part of that process.”

Minister for Planning Matthew Guy said the maps identifying bushfire-prone areas would be used to determine who will be required to undertake a bushfire attack level (BAL) assessment in order to obtain a building permit.

“The Royal Commission heard evidence that ember attack is the predominant bushfire attack mechanism.” Mr. Guy said.

“Until now BAL assessments were required on every new dwelling in Victoria but the new bushfire-prone mapping clearly shows which areas now require the assessment. The mapping uses the best available science, responds to bushfire threat in a state-wide approach and ensures the lives of Victorians are of primary concern.”

“The Coalition Government is committed to improving bushfire safety. The building regulations deliver tangible improvements that will better protect homes and communities in bushfire-prone areas across the state.”

The Building Amendment (Bushfire Construction) Regulations 2011 form part of the new Planning and Building System Improvements delivered in response to the Royal Commission’s recommendations 37 and 49.3.
