The 2011 Gippsland Lakes Boat Show and Muster have received $17,500 from the Coalition Government through the Tourism Victoria Events Program.

Tourism and Major Events Minister Louise Asher said this was a signature event for the region and an opportunity to promote Gippsland as a water-based tourism destination.

The 2011 Muster will be held on the sheltered waters around Paynesville, widely regarded as the Boating Capital of Victoria.

Unlike other boating shows in Australia, the Gippsland Lakes Boat Show and Muster is designed to get people actively involved on the water and encourages participation by people with a wide range of vessels.

“There is a high percentage of boat ownership in the immediate area and the destination consistently attracts boat owners from other parts of Victoria and interstate.” Ms. Asher said.

The Muster will include various water-based and land activities such as sailing championships, a boat show and expo, test drives of boats, water safety demonstrations, and local food and wine stalls.

“This is a Boat Show where you can join in the action on your boat or simply take a tour of the glistening Gippsland Lakes on one of the chartered vessels around the Lakes.” Member for Gippsland East Tim Bull said.

The Parade will pass through McMillan Strait (the waters between the mainland and Raymond Island) providing an ideal opportunity for spectators to see the wide variety of events on offer.

“The event is a terrific way to showcase the collection of wonderful boats we have on the Gippsland Lakes.” Mr. Bull said.

“I was delighted to present the strong case to the Minister for this event to be supported by the Tourism Victoria Events Program.”

Mr. Bull said experienced boat owners would be on hand at the event to provide information and advice about a variety of boats and aspects of life on sailing craft.

Funding received from the Coalition Government will be used to help market the event through print and online advertising as well as cross-promotion with interstate regattas.

“The Coalition Government is committed to supporting events to help boost the profile of regional Victoria and our vibrant tourism industry.” Ms. Asher said.

The Gippsland Lakes Boat Show and Muster will be held on 3 April 2011 in Paynesville.
