Parliamentary Committee To Investigate Water Pricing Policy And Government Actions

State Parliament’s Budget and Finance Committee will investigate a series of damning allegations made by former ESCOSA chief executive Dr. Paul Kerin regarding water pricing policy and actions of the Labor Government.

“Dr. Kerin has exposed the Weatherill Government’s price gouging on the water bills of South Australian families and businesses.” Shadow Treasurer Rob Lucas said.

The State Liberals will move for the inquiry at Monday’s meeting of the Committee and the Hon. John Darley MLC has indicated he will support the move.

The Budget and Finance Committee will give Dr. Kerin a forum to explain:

  • Why water is so expensive in South Australia;
  • What type of economic reform is needed to drive down the price of water in South Australia;
  • What role ESCOSA should have in driving that reform;
  • How Weatherill Government Ministers and senior bureaucrats had stymied efforts for reform and efforts to serve the long-term interests of consumers.

“The State Labor Government’s savage increases in the price of water in South Australia during the past decade are distorting the broader South Australian economy.” Mr. Lucas said.

“It is critical that there is an open and frank inquiry into why water in South Australia is so expensive and how the price can be driven down.”

“It is also critical that Dr. Kerin’s explosive and damning criticisms of the Weatherill Government are fully investigated.”

Mr. Darley has also indicated his support for an urgent meeting of the Committee to take evidence from Dr. Kerin and for subsequent hearings for other witnesses.

The Committee will therefore convene as soon as possible to take evidence from Dr. Kerin.
