Generous Victorians Save The Lives Of Transplant Recipients

Victor P Taffa

A total of 107 Victorian families made the generous decision to donate the organs of a loved one in 2011, Minister for Health David Davis said today.

Speaking at the Victorian launch of DonateLife Week 2012 and a new DVD to promote organ and tissue donation, Mr. Davis said donations from Victoria made up nearly one third of the 337 organ donors from across Australia in 2011.

“I commend Victorians who with their families have made such a generous commitment in donating their organs, the ultimate gift of life for Victorians requiring transplantation.” Mr. Davis said.

“DonateLife Week is an important time for us all to spread the word that organ and tissue donors save lives.”

The theme of DonateLife Week 2012 is ‘Ask and know your loved ones’ wishes, especially this week because it’s DonateLife Week.’

Mr. Davis said in 2011, DonateLife Victoria co-ordinated 107 organ donors, an increase from the 98 organ donors in 2010.

“In 2011 Victoria achieved a donation rate of 19 donors per Million, well above the national rate of 14.9 donors per Million.” Mr. Davis added.

“However there is still more we can all do to improve this rate. There are around 1,600 Australians on the organ transplant waiting list and some people still die waiting for an organ transplant.”

“DonateLife Week is therefore a timely reminder for all Victorians to talk about organ donation with their family and friends. A single donor can save or improve up to ten lives.”

Mr. Davis said the Victorian Coalition Government was committed to increasing the rates of organ donation in Victoria.

“We have delivered an additional $2.7 Million to support increased transplantation and retrieval services in Victoria to ensure these services keep pace with our increasing donation rate.” Mr. Davis said.

“A wide-ranging Parliamentary Inquiry into options and mechanisms to increase organ donation in Victoria is expected to report in coming months.”

“That inquiry has had submissions from a large number of individuals and organisations passionate about ensuring that we continue to increase the number of organ donors and organs available for transplantation to Victorians.”

“The Coalition Government looks forward to working with all members of the Victorian community to continue to increase awareness about organ donation and help make Victoria one of the world leaders in donation and transplantation services.”
