National Parks, Sport and Recreation Minister Steve Dickson is visiting the Big Pineapple today to learn more about an industry proposal for a Sunshine Coast Great Rides Trail.

Mr. Dickson will meet with biking industry groups, tourism operators and members of the local community as they discuss concepts for the 180 km multi-use trail to connect existing trails throughout the Sunshine Coast region.

“The Newman Government is committed to opening up Queensland’s National Parks for everyone to enjoy and this proposal is exactly the type of project we’d like to see put into action.” Mr. Dickson said.

“A Sunshine Coast Great Rides Trail could also have a huge range of flow-on eco-tourism and economic benefits for surrounding communities across the region.”

“I’m looking forward to hearing what everyone has to say about this project, which will need a great level of partnership between the tourism and business sector, biking groups an d locals to become a reality.” Mr. Dickson said.

“I think there is enormous potential in an idea like this, and am also eager to see the results of a feasibility study undertaken by the drivers of the proposal later in the year.”

Mr. Dickson said he was focused on finding new ways to open up National Parks land for recreational use and eco-tourism opportunities across Queensland.

“In particular I am looking at opening fire trails and management roads in the majority of Queensland’s National Parks to mountain biking and horse-riding.”

“Eco-tourism is set to be a major part of our plan for growing the tourism pillar of Queensland’s economy, which is why we are working to increase certainty and opportunity for operators across our National Park estate.” Mr. Dickson said.
