A three-kilometre section of the Narrogin-Kondinin Road between Wickepin and Kulin is being widened to two lanes, to improve safety on the important regional route.

Awarding the $1.25 Million contract to Southern Roads Services, Transport Minister Simon O’Brien said the section of road between Wickepin and Kulin was very narrow and needs to be widened to meet current safety standards.

“The Liberal-National Government takes road safety seriously our sound economic management means that we can get on with building important projects like this one.” Mr. O’Brien said.

“The works will involve widening the existing single lane seal to a two-lane, eight-metre wide sealed road.”

“Once the work is complete there will be two 3.5 m lanes plus a 0.5 metre sealed shoulder in each direction, meaning vehicles will not have to veer onto the gravel when facing oncoming traffic, making the journey much safer for everyone using the road.”

“As well as the eight-metre wide sealed carriageway, the works will also include the installation of a one-metre wide unsealed shoulder in each direction.” Mr. O’Brien said.

Funding for the work is being provided by the Commonwealth under Stage 2 of its Nation Building Program.

The works are scheduled to commence in March and are expected to be completed in May 2010.
