Victor P Taffa
Women’s Interests Minister Robyn McSweeney today attended at the official opening of the new Women’s Health and Family Services premises in Northbridge.
The not-for-profit organisation has been providing services for West Australian women and their families since 1977 and is a fully integrated primary health care organisation. It is one of the major providers of specialist gender-specific health services across the State, averaging 60,000 contacts per year.
“It is fitting to be opening this new facility for women, in this important centenary celebratory year of International Women’s Day celebrations held in March where we can highlight the valuable work Women’s Health and Family Services provides to WA women and their families.” Mrs. McSweeney said.
“Personal and family health has always been an issue of fundamental importance to women and this service will continue to provide women with a comprehensive range of programs in both the Perth metropolitan and regional areas of our State.”
The purpose-built facility was made possible by $4.1 Million in Lotterywest funding from the State Government and offers a range of programs including the Aboriginal Health Women’s Project; Family and Domestic Violence Services; health and nutrition and medical services with a doctor or nurse.
“Women of our State were not always so fortunate in having a valuable service such as this as the circumstances in the early days of the settlement of Western Australia were very different and a mere 100 years ago, women knew little about their own bodies.” the Minister said.
“Health services, particularly for women in rural and regional WA, did not exist and as a result, if women became ill themselves, it usually had life threatening consequences.”
“Through organisations such as the Women’s Health and Family Services centre, the quest for better health and wellbeing remains at the forefront.”
The Women’s Health and Family Services premise is located at 227 Newcastle Street, Northbridge and can be contacted by calling (08) 9227 8122 or Toll-Free 1800 998 399 outside the Perth Metropolitan Area.
