Teen Arrested After Elderly Woman Target Of Theft – Newcastle
Police from Newcastle City have arrested and charged a teenager following an attack on an elderly woman at her home in Mayfield last week.
About 2 pm, Tuesday 29 December, an 89-year-old woman was at her home in Newcastle Street, Mayfield when it is alleged a 17-year-old male knocked on the back door of her home.
Police will allege the teen claimed he was being chased and asked to be let into the woman’s home.
Once the elderly woman let him in, it is alleged the teenager stole her purse before grabbing her around the throat as he tried to leave the home.
The teenager was able to flee the house through a bedroom window while the woman, who was shaken but uninjured in the attack, contacted Police.
During that day, investigations by Police from Newcastle City Local Area Command led them to a home on George Street, Mayfield East where they conducted a search warrant recovering the woman’s property.
It is also alleged Police located an amount of other property including:
- A camera,
- A mountain bike all believed to have been stolen.
About 6 pm yesterday (Saturday 2 January), the 17-year-old was arrested at a department store in Jesmond and taken to Waratah Police Station where he was charged with:
- Aggravated commit serious indictable offence using violence
- Three counts of goods in custody.
The teenager was refused bail and is expected to appear at Newcastle Children’s Court today.
Investigations into the matter are continuing.
