Coalition Government Orders New Trains To Begin Fixing Victoria’s Public Transport Network

Victor P Taffa

Minister for Public Transport Terry Mulder today joined Ballarat based train manufacturer Alstom Australia, at Flinders Street Station to purchase seven new X’Trapolis trains for Victoria’s public transport network.

Mr. Mulder said the Coalition Government is delivering on its commitment to fix Victoria’s public transport network with new trains to increase services, improve reliability and improve passenger comfort.

“The Coalition Government is fixing the problems obvious to Victorians who use the trains every day including the overcrowding that ruins the journey to and from work.” Mr. Mulder said.

“This is the first order for seven new trains which is part of the Coalition’s commitment to put an additional 40 trains on our network, delivering an enormous increase in the capacity and performance of the metropolitan train network.”

X’Trapolis trains have the highest level of reliability on the Melbourne network.

The Victorian Government has signed an agreement with Alstom to assemble the seven trains in Ballarat, providing continued employment for about 100 employees across Victoria.

This contract includes requirements to deliver the highest level of local production, compared to past purchases, for the newest train model in Melbourne’s fleet.

“This is a significant win for Melbourne’s train travellers and the Victorian economy.” Mr. Mulder said.

Ongoing maintenance of these trains will also be carried out in Victoria, providing a further boost to the local manufacturing industry.

Joining Mr. Mulder for the contract signing today, Alstom Australia CEO Chris Raine said deliveries of Alstom’s X’Trapolis trains continue to be on budget and ahead of the contract schedule.

The X’Trapolis trains host a number of new technological features which include computer-controlled traction, braking and safety systems. Each train also features a state-of-the-art, fully-integrated CCTV passenger information system.
