Tenders Called For New Stage Of Great Eastern Drive Upgrade

Victor P Taffa

Tenders are now open for upgrades to the Tasman Highway, between Basin Creek and St. Helens, the next stage of improvements to the Great Eastern Drive.

Tasmanian Government is rolling out our record infrastructure program, as well as fast-tracking and investing even more into job-creating infrastructure as part of our COVID-19 recovery package.

Our program of works is providing security and supporting jobs in the civil construction industry, with works already underway across Tasmania’s roads and highways, and eight projects currently out for tender, Minister for Infrastructure and Transport Michael Ferguson said.

Great Eastern Drive is a 176 km section of the Tasman Highway from Orford-St. Helens.

“Tasmanian Government is delivering a series of upgrades along this route as part of our Road Package to support Tasmania’s Visitor Economy.” Minister Ferguson said.

Aim is to improve access to the region’s iconic attractions for visitors while also providing a safer and more convenient road environment for all road users.

Basin Creek to St. Helens stage will add two dedicated overtaking lanes, and widen and re-align the road at specific points.

Work will improve sight distances and reduce ongoing maintenance costs.

Tenders close on 23 September, 2020, and work is scheduled to take place during the 2020-21 construction season.
