  • Community tours and open day will be held at Karratha Health Campus on Saturday, September 8

Final countdown to the opening of the eagerly anticipated Karratha Health Campus has begun, and the emergency department will open its doors at 8 am on Wednesday September 19, 2018.

“I recently visited Karratha and toured the hospital; its opening offers an exciting new chapter for the local community. It’s a stunning space for us to deliver world-class health care to the residents of the Pilbara.” Minister for Health Roger Cook said.

“From Wednesday September 19, patients will be able to access the full range of services on offer at the new Karratha Health Campus, including the emergency department which will open at 8 am.”

At the same time the new state-of-the-art facility opens, the emergency department at Nickol Bay Hospital will close and anyone requiring emergency medical treatment will need to attend the new Karratha Health Campus.

Today’s announcement is part of a public information campaign to ensure residents from Karratha and surrounding communities know where to go in the event of an emergency.

“This is a major milestone in Karratha’s transformation from a mining town into a modern regional city that its residents see as their permanent home.” Minister for Regional Development Alannah MacTiernan said.

“Providing access to quality health care facilities and services is critical to creating strong regional communities in which people choose to live and raise a family.”

Staged opening of Karratha Health Campus will begin on Monday September 17. The first outpatients will be welcomed on Tuesday September 18. The final inpatient move and emergency department opening will occur at 8 am on Wednesday September 19. PathWest appointments will commence at the new campus from September 19.

New Karratha Health Campus boasts an expanded emergency department, a brand new surgical centre plus a new maternity wing and delivery suites. Essential services such as medical imaging and world-class telehealth services are also incorporated into the facility, along with a new outpatients’ area.

“Hundreds of Karratha residents are expected through the doors of the campus on Saturday September 8 as they take part in scheduled public tours of this wonderful facility, offering a unique opportunity to have a sneak peek behind the scenes before it officially opens to the public.” Pilbara MLA Kevin Michel said.

“Development of Karratha Health Campus is the biggest investment ever undertaken in a public hospital in regional WA. The new hospital also continues some links to the old Nickol Bay Hospital, with some mature frangipani trees relocated into the internal courtyards of the new campus.”

This infrastructure project, along with many others across the State, is just one part of a modernisation program taking place across the WA Country Health Service (WACHS).

Improvements to infrastructure along with new patient information systems and a virtual workforce provided by telehealth and Emergency Telehealth Services combine to provide the best possible care for Karratha and surrounding communities in the West Pilbara.

WACHS board visited the new health campus during one of its regional meetings held in Karratha. Professor Neale Fong said that the board was proud of what the project has been able to achieve for the Pilbara community.
