  • $100 Million committed for the 2 stage major upgrade of Warrnambool Base Hospital
  • Construction of new Emergency Department and operating theatre suite to begin in Coalition’s second term

A Re-Elected Napthine Coalition Government has committed to delivering the second stage of major capital upgrades at the Warrnambool Base Hospital, Premier and Member for the South West Coast Denis Napthine announced today.

“This is an exciting day for Warrnambool hospital and everyone in the South-west, who will benefit from this significant capital upgrade.” Dr. Napthine said.

Dr. Napthine said that the total $100 Million project would be completed in a number of phases, with the first phase of construction to begin in 2017-18.

“In the next term of Government, a re-elected Coalition will provide up to $30 Million to undertake the first phase of works.” Dr. Napthine said.

“This will deliver a number of critical improvements, including a new three storey building to house a new, expanded Emergency Department and expanded operating theatre suite.”

Dr. Napthine said that a re-elected Coalition would immediately begin work with South-West Healthcare to finalise the details of the first phase of works.

Planning would then commence to finalise details for the remaining $70 Million of construction, which would be completed after the 2018 election.

“We are absolutely committed to delivering this upgrade in full, so that families in Warrnambool and the South-West can continue to receive word-class healthcare, close to home.” Dr. Napthine said.

Further service planning will be undertaken by the Department of Health and South West Healthcare to ensure redevelopments suitable not only for today but well into the future to meet the needs of the region.

The full stage two upgrade works at the hospital are also expected to deliver:

  • Significant upgrades to medical imaging facilities;
  • Upgrades to outpatient, obstetrics and pathology areas;
  • Expansion and refurbishment of inpatient and day surgery facilities.

Dr. Napthine said that this major expansion will be complemented by the $30 Million South West Regional Cancer Centre, delivered by the Napthine Coalition, which is expected to commence construction in early 2015.

“The Coalition has provided a number of expansion works at Warrnambool Hospital, including Stage 1 of redevelopment which opened in 2013, $4.2 Million for a new mental health Prevention and Recovery Care (PARC) facility and $2.27 Million for a new four bed Short Stay Unit.” Dr. Napthine said.

“Since coming to government, the Coalition has delivered a 31.4 % increase to the operating budget of South West Healthcare, with total funding of $111.6 Million in 2014-15.”
