Work To Commence On New Future For South Hedland

LandCorp is set to commence work on the much needed extension and realignment of South Hedland’s Main Street as part of the State Government’s $23 Million Royalties for Regions project to revitalise the Town Centre.

Designed to make a bold entry statement to the Town, Murdoch Drive will be extended into Colebatch Way to create a centralised main street featuring an array of retail and commercial businesses such as cafes, boutiques and restaurants.

Part of the Pilbara Cities blueprint to deliver major infrastructure and amenity upgrades in key North West Towns, the Project will involve shifting Colebatch Way 13 metres to the east.

Regional Development and Lands Minister Brendon Grylls said the new Main Street would become the new heart and soul of the Town.

“The new tree-lined Main Street will provide an inviting Town Entrance leading to an array of alfresco style cafes, shops and restaurants complemented by shaded, Pedestrian Friendly Walkways.” Mr. Grylls said.

“The Pilbara Cities Vision is about building vibrant places where people choose to live, and this is exactly what we are delivering for South Hedland.”

Mr. Grylls said LandCorp and the Town of Port Hedland were working in partnership with the private sector to offer a range of commercial and retail opportunities along South Hedland’s new main street with residential apartments on the floors above.

“Two parcels of land have been offered to the private sector to build medium density developments along the Murdoch Drive extension.” the Minister said.

“People living in the heart of the town will provide the spark needed to ignite further growth and an enduring sense of community.”

The Main Street will also give residents direct access to the South Hedland Shopping Centre via a new Main Entrance on Colebatch Way.

Construction of the Multi-Purpose Town Square will commence upon completion of the Main Road Realignment in Mid-2011.

Also part of the State Government’s commitment to South Hedland, the Town Square will feature:

  • A Shaded Marketplace;
  • Landscaped Open Spaces;
  • A Grassed Outdoor Amphitheatre for Concerts and Festivals.
