Coalition Government Delivers On Additional Race Meet At Avoca

Minister for Racing Denis Napthine today confirmed that Racing Victoria Limited has agreed to provide an additional race meeting to Avoca to be held in late November or early December.

“The Coalition promised the Turf Club and the wider Avoca community it would restore a third race meeting to Avoca and we have now delivered on this promise.” Dr. Napthine said.

“Avoca has a long and successful history of racing, not least being the Avoca Cup which is older than the Melbourne Cup.”

“Race meets at Avoca promote the best of the region, showcasing local produce, wines and fashion in the ultimate package for families and race-goers alike.”

“Having an extra meeting at the beginning of summer will be a real boost not just for the Turf Club and the local racing industry, but also to the community who make a real event of race days at the Avoca track.” Dr. Napthine said.

Minister Napthine paid tribute to the Avoca Shire Turf Club for its lobbying to have the third race day restored and looks forward to working with the Turf Club and members of the greater Avoca Racing industry to ensure the Club’s ongoing success.

“The previous Labor Government had a track record of scrapping race meetings, particularly in rural and regional Victoria. In stark contrast, the Coalition Government will help to reverse these cuts.” Dr. Napthine said.

“The racing industry is a major contributor to rural and regional Victoria’s economy and employs tens of thousands of country Victorians. The industry must be supported so that it can benefit the wider community.” Dr. Napthine said.

In 2010/11, the Turf Club hosted its Cup meeting in October and will hold, as part of the Pyrenees Festival of Racing & Tasting, its Anzac Day race meeting on April 25.

Final discussions are being held between the Turf Club, Country Racing Victoria and Racing Victoria Limited to confirm the exact date.
